History Nights at Fort Mifflin
Spending the night in a fort and exploring the walls, rooms and casemates is an exciting, hands-on experience. You and your troop can have a scavenger hunt, sit around the fireplace in the Enlisted Quarters at night and tell stories of all the things you saw and learned that day.
Part of your stay can be used to earn a badge or pin. Take a hike back at the old abandoned "High Battery." The site of a post-Civil War Artillery Battery that was never completed and very few people ever get to see it. While you are there you can check out the abundance of nature, fauna and flora. |
This is what troop leaders that have stayed at Fort Mifflin have said about the program:
"I never even knew this place existed and now I'm going to be a regular visitor."
"Never have I nor my son had such an experience. The soldiers, the cannon and the activities. I never knew learning history could be so fun."
"Way to go Fort Mifflin. It has been a week since we had our overnight program at Fort Mifflin and our entire troop can't stop talking about their experiences. What is really interesting is that the adults who went along probably learned as much as the scouts. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. We'll be back!" |
Our Goal
To provide a unique, hands-on overnight educational experience that will make scouts want to learn. And scouts are also students, so they will bring their experiences home, but also bring their enthusiasm into the classroom and want to learn even more in Social Studies. Our curriculum not only meets the Pennsylvania and New Jersey state standards, but also the family fun standards like no other overnight trip you'll make.
Program Length and Availability
Scout overnights begin at 4:00 pm and end at 4:00 pm the next day. Stay as short or long as you like in that time. Programs are custom made to each troop and can be tailored to your needs. The Scout Overnight Program is available all-year long, but weekends in the months of April, May, October and November fill up quickly. Please contact us immediately about availability.
Scout Troop Day-Trips are also available, Monday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm, throughout the year (even when Fort Mifflin is closed to the general public.) When your troop arrives you are met by your own personal Uniformed Interpretive Guide (choose either Revolutionary or Civil War era uniform) where you get to march into the Fort to participate in the Fort Mifflin flag raising ceremony (great experience for earning your flag patch.) Your troop is then given a tour of the entire Fort and then a uniform and weapons demonstration (additional charge for cannon demonstration.) We may offer a unique and entertaining choice of activities you can enjoy during the course of your stay. (Please call for a complete list when booking your Day-Trip.) All this for only $10 per person.
Group Sizes
From 25 to 200 scouts is our usual group sizes. One chaperone for every 10 scouts is required for the overnight stays. Extra chaperones are welcome and encouraged and can be either made up of men or women. To make the programs more enjoyable with large groups it may be necessary to divide them up into smaller groups when doing activities or programs.
Housing
Your troop can stay in any of the designated restored historic buildings, such as the (Enlisted Barracks, the Casemates or the Officers Quarters), but the size of the troop will be a factor due to the limited size of these buildings. Most buildings are heated and air conditioned (except the Casemates) and most have working fireplaces in them (except the Officer Quarters.) Or you can pitch a tent and sleep under the stars in the Parade Ground, or up on the Parapet or around some of the other historic buildings (Ex: Blacksmith Shop, Arsenal or the Artillery Shed.) Bathroom facilities for boys and girls are located inside the fort (showers are not available.)
Food
Your troop is responsible for providing its own food for the dinner hour. We allow cooking over open fire pits (dug by your group and returned to their original condition) and responsibility for the safety of the scouts is held by the chaperones. A waiver/release will be provided upon your arrival.
Fees
This is all included in your basic package: Your troop will receive a tour of the Fort by one of our Uniformed Interpretive Guides (choose a Revolutionary or Civil War theme), a uniform and weapons demonstration, Fort Activities you provide may be coordinated with the Fort staff and you have plenty of free time to roam the Fort and/or activity time toward earning a number of Cub, Girl or Boy Scout badges or pins.
